If you have read through our site and are confused by any of the terminology
we have been using, this page should help. Below we have listed many
of the common terms used when talking about "Floor Mount Jib Cranes, Wall
Mount Jib Cranes, Bridge Cranes, etc.

Definitions:
- Beam depth:
The vertical dimension of an "I" or
"W" shaped
beam when it’s cross-section is seen standing upright.
- Beam Flange (flange width):
Flanges are the top and bottom flat
portions of an "I" or "W" shaped beam. The flange width describes the
horizontal dimension of an "I" or "W" shaped beam when it’s
cross-section is seen standing upright.
- BEEC (Bottom Entry Electrical Collector):
A unit that allows
electric power to be provided to a jib with a boom that can rotate 360
degrees or greater. This unit is mounted between the boom and the column on
the axis of rotation. This method allows electricity to be provided from
conduit run through the foundation and base plate and into the interior of
the jib crane column.
- Festooning:
A method for providing power to a hoist traveling
along a beam.
- Gage:
The distance between the centerlines of the girders on a
top running double girder bridge crane. The recommended spacing for bolt holes on the
flange of an "I" or "W" shaped beam, measured
perpendicular to the web.
- Head section:
The part of a floor mounted jib crane
that rides on the column and supports the boom.
- H.U.B.:
Height under the beam or boom of a gantry or jib crane.
- Pendant:
A control for a hoist and/or a crane. The pendant hangs
from the hoist or the crane by a cord at a height that is easy for the
operator to reach.
- Rotation stops:
Physical stops welded to the column to
limit the rotation of the jib. These stops are generally field mounted.
- RPM:
Rotations Per Minute.
- Span:
The length of reach of a jib crane, measured from the centerline of
rotation to the tip of the boom. The distance between supports of a gantry or a bridge crane.
- Tagline:
A tagline is a wire or cable that is pulled tight and
run the length of a load bearing beam to support electric wires or air hose.
The tagline allows a wire or hose to travel with a trolley,
without being in the way of the operator.
- TEAS (Top Entry Air Swivel):
A unit that allows compressed air
to be provided to a jib with a boom that can rotate 360 degrees or greater.
This unit is mounted on top of the beam on the axis of rotation.
- TEEC (Top Entry Electrical Collector):
A unit that allows
electric power to be provided to a jib with a boom that can rotate 360
degrees or greater. This unit is mounted on top of the beam on the axis of
rotation.
- Thrust and pull:
The force a bottom hinge of a wall
mounted crane pushes on the supporting structure; also the force the top hinge pulls on the supporting structure.
- Top running:
A case where a hoist or a bridge crane runs on
rails on top of support beams.
- Trolley:
A device having wheels that rides on a beam lower
flange and
supports a hoist and/or a load.
- Under-hung:
A situation where a load is supported by hanging from the
lower flange of a beam.
